Check out the latest addition to Emond's popular criminal law series.

    Information provided on Emond's website:

In Detention, Arrest, and the Right to Counsel, Justice Davin Michael Garg (Ontario Court of Justice) and defence counsel Anil Kapoor provide a practical examination of early “street level” interactions between law enforcement and members of the public through the lens of sections 9 and 10 in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

National in scope, this resource focuses on three major areas: detention, arrest and the right to counsel. The first major area covers the power to detain a person, addressing law enforcement’s statutory and common law powers, including investigative detention and traffic stops. This area also addresses the issue of racial profiling. The second area covers the power to arrest, including the mechanism of an arrest, reasonable grounds, arrest with and without warrant, and more. Unlike other texts in this area, this handbook includes a third area with comprehensive coverage of the right to counsel, discussing law enforcement’s informational and implementational obligations under sections 10(a) and 10(b).

Did you know that the PLA collection also contains books
on the historical aspect of law? One such book is Quiet Rebels which focuses on female lawyers here in Ontario and the challenges they had to face and overcome.

Information provided on the Wilfrid Laurier University Press' website:

“It’s a girl!” the Ontario press announced, as Canada’s first woman lawyer was called to the Ontario bar in February 1897.  Quiet Rebels explores experiences of exclusion among the few women lawyers for the next six decades, and how their experiences continue to shape gender issues in the contemporary legal profession.

Mary Jane Mossman tells the stories of all 187 Ontario women lawyers called to the bar from 1897 to 1957, revealing the legal profession’s gendered patterns. Comprising a small handful of students—or even a single student—at the Law School, women were often ignored, and they faced discrimination in obtaining articling positions and legal employment. Most were Protestant, white, and middle-class, and a minority of Jewish, Catholic, Black, and immigrant women lawyers faced even greater challenges. The book also explores some changes, as well as continuities, for the much larger numbers of Ontario women lawyers in recent decades.
