Library Services

The following services are provided in the PLA Library:

Documents for printing may be sent to Library staff prior to your arrival. Make sure to indicate which documents needs to be printed, the number of copies required, and if you need your printing to be done in colour. Documents may be sent to library@plalawyers.ca.

Scanning services only allow for documents to be sent to the customer's email address. We will not send documents to the courts, etc.

Borrowing Privileges

Only current PLA members are able to sign books out of the library for use. This can be for overnight use or to take resources to use in the courtroom for the day. Members are able to sign out up to 3 books at a time, each for a 7 day period. Kindly note, fines for overdue books will be charged on any unreturned items beyond the borrowing period and are subject to replacement fees along with any associated administrative costs.

Use of materials does not extend to Reference Books, Indices or Case Law Reports. All materials borrowed overnight are subject to immediate recall with no renewals.

Not a member? The PLA Library is open to all lawyers in good standing with the LSO, articling students, and LPP/NCA candidates. They are welcome to come into the library and use our collection, but they cannot take books out of the PLA facilities.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

This resource is available on two of our computers (look for workstations with signage). Use this program to edit PDF documents and request electronic signatures.

Soundproof Booths

There are two soundproof booths located in the PLA library that may be used to conduct your phone calls or Zoom appearances in court.

These booths are available on a first come, first served basis.

PLA Members are able to contact PLA staff to reserve a booth for their use.

Charging Equipment

Need to charge your electronic devices?

The PLA has charging equipment that is compatible with most cell phones and laptops. Please see PLA staff in the library to complete our charging equipment form.

Please note that equipment is loaned for the day and late/replacement fees may be applicable to damaged or unreturned items.

WiFi Services

There is free WiFi services available within the PLA Lounge & Library. See signage located within the PLA facilities for the network name and password to connect to our WiFi.

Our WiFi is not available outside of the PLA facilities. If you require WiFi access within the other areas of the courthouse, please visit our Courthouse WiFi page.

Borrow Court Attire

The PLA has court attire available for counsel who have forgotten their own or are making an unexpected appearance in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

We have white shirts, robes, waist coats, and court tabs available for use. Please note that we may not have the exact size you require.

Please see staff in the PLA library for assistance.

Kindly note that you may be charged for the full replacement fee for any damaged or unreturned items.

HappyLights

The PLA is has two HappyLights available to provide bright light therapy. Bright light therapy improves sleep, boosts mood, increases energy, and enhances focus so you feel revitalized throughout the day. It can also help those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs during the same season each year. It usually happens in the fall or winter. Click here for more information.

Accessibility Services

We have the following items available in the library:

    • Reading glasses (available at various strengths/lens power)
    • Magnifier
      • Helps with reading texts by magnifying a document for you on a digital reader
      • Can also dictate text to you (provided in various languages)
    • Audio assists
      • Can be used in the courtroom or during PLA CPDs to amplify sound if you have difficulty hearing the speakers
