If asked to reflect back over the course of your life about who had the greatest influence as a leader and helped you get to where you are today, who comes to mind? What qualities allowed them to have such a profound influence on your life? Research suggests that leadership success, well-being, happiness, and performance have as much if not more to do with social and emotional intelligence than legal knowledge and cognitive intelligence. Indeed, leadership is about how you make others feel and what you bring out in them, and research shows that only about 15% of success is determined by intellectual abilities, technical skills, and knowledge. This book is about the key factors that make up the other 85% of success: factors that fall under the umbrella of emotional intelligence.

Leading in the Law with Emotional Intelligence offers extraordinary stories that reveal how the four domains of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness or empathy, and relationship management) form the basis of exceptional leadership in the law. It also includes dozens of self-discovery exercises; reflective writing prompts; vignettes; and legal application of material from diverse fields, including business, psychology, and neuroscience, to equip students with the skills necessary to lead in the law in the twenty-first century, sustain personal happiness, and develop and maintain the rich relationships necessary to both.

In the Courts: A Counsel’s Memoir depicts the distinguished life and career of Earl A. Cherniak, K.C., one of Canada’s leading advocates, spanning more than six decades – from 1960 to 2026.

Cherniak has been formative to the development of advocacy in Canada’s court systems and is a renowned expert in commercial arbitration and dispute resolution. In this memoir, he reflects on his lifelong association with the firm Lerners, offering a rare glimpse into the life of an advocate in Canadian courts and tribunals. He traces his early years in practice, including clerking for Chief Justice McRuer and appearing in his first Supreme Court of Canada appeals, and explores the transformation of Canadian personal injury and fatal accident damage law, including the landmark Teno v. Arnold trilogy. He also reflects on complex trials, expert evidence, class actions, arbitrations, and high-profile cases, such as International Corona v. Lac Minerals, Horton v. Joyce, Groia v. The Law Society, the Morand, Krever, Patti Starr, and Walkerton public inquiries, and more. Cherniak highlights the lessons learned throughout his long and storied career while meditating on the changing profession.

Medical liability matters can have significant consequences for patients and healthcare providers alike. In 2024–2025, approximately 153,000 hospital stays in Canada involved at least one occurrence of unintended harm.

Designed to equip personal injury practitioners with a practical understanding of the healthcare provider and patient fiduciary relationship, this guide examines standards of care, causation, injury and damages, informed consent, defences to negligence, and effective litigation strategies. It also explores the many forms of medical negligence, including misdiagnosis, mistreatment, medication errors, surgical errors, failures to monitor patients, and failures to provide appropriate follow-up care.

Family violence cases present some of the most complex and consequential challenges in family law. Allegations of abuse are rarely isolated incidents; they often reflect patterns of coercive control, power imbalance, and trauma that profoundly affect survivors and, most critically, children. Courts across the country continue to grapple with how to respond effectively, particularly when family violence allegations intersect with custody disputes, post-divorce conflict, and concerns for child safety.

Litigating Family Violence: A Practitioner’s Handbook provides practical, trauma-informed, and legally rigorous guidance for attorneys and related professionals navigating these high-stakes matters. Published by the ABA Litigation Section, this comprehensive resource equips practitioners with the tools necessary to advocate effectively while centering safety, credibility, and the best interests of children.
